JPO Radar Gun

These are unique times for aeromodelers. As we all know the FAA is in the process of drafting regulation for the operation of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) in the national air space (NAS). By their very nature model aircraft are sUAS and we will most likely see some impact from these new regulations once they are implemented in 2013.

Safety has always been a priority concern at our jet events. For the most part the turbine community has done a good job of policing itself and, in fact, does remarkably well. However, it’s important that this year we be extra vigilant in ensuring safety at our events. As we work though the process of FAA regulation we have consistently pointed to model aviation’s exceptional safety record. We need to continue to maintain that exemplary record especially at our high profile fly-ins like the ones you manage.

We know that sometimes contest directors have to make hard decisions to address safety concerns and that sometimes these decisions aren’t popular. But it’s important that you continue to make these decisions when you feel they are in the best interest of the turbine community. And we want you to know that both AMA and JPO will support you in making these decisions.

Through a private donation of one of its members, the JPO has acquired a commercial grade radar gun that allows accurate speed measurements from a safe distance.  This gun has been tested at several recent events and has generated positive feedback from the CDs involved.  We are pleased to offer this equipment to you on a voluntary basis if you are running an event in 2011.
+  The use of the gun is free; however, the cost of shipping the gun to the next event on the schedule would be borne by the event CD.  Loss or damage to the gun would also be borne by the event CD.
+  A suggested user’s guide has been developed based on experience of the first few trial events.  It contains tips to help you integrate the gun into your event in a constructive, non-confrontational fashion.
+  The gun will be available on a first come, first served basis.
+  No reporting is required.
